THE FLORAL HEART PROJECT // MARCH 1ST A DAY OF MOURNING FOR VICTIMS OF COVID-19
Last week, WGC joined in a nationwide effort to lay floral hearts as a living memorial to those lost to and during Covid-19. The project was founded by Kristina Libby because she felt saddened by the lack of public outpouring to memorialize those we had lost. She was disheartened that so little was being done to honor them and help those who were grieving. So she laid one heart and hoped it might show someone that another person cared about their suffering. On March 1st, over 100 floral hearts were laid all of the country from Blue Hill, Maine to Chattanooga, TN to Carlsbad, CA. In Philadelphia, we laid 7 hearts: at Chestnut Hill, Lankenau, Jefferson, Penn and Temple Hospitals, Rittenhouse Square, and Love Park. To create the hearts, we met in small, socially-distanced and masked groups using over 1600 stems donated by DV Flora and 1-800-Flowers. Big thanks to Anna, Ann, Wendy, Jane, Emilie, Leslie, Maryalice and Deb. It was a labor of love to create the hearts. For me, it was also a wonderful and long-awaited reason to get together with fellow club members. This is something that I have truly missed. On Monday, we traveled in groups to deliver the hearts and were met with such appreciation and thanks. At Lankenau there was even a short memorial service which you will hear more about in a just a minute. Thank you again to everyone who participated. I’d like to leave you with a message we received from one of the hospitals, “What a meaningful tribute to the many patients who succumbed to COVID. As we start to emerge from a year of uncertainty, anxiety and sorrow, we are encouraged by the dwindling COVID cases, the vaccine and many new ways to fight the virus. Thank you again for helping us start to heal.”
